WASHINGTON, DC—Today, David J. Johns, executive director of the National Black Justice Coalition (NBJC), released the following statement about the United States House of Representatives’ successful vote to impeach Donald Trump for his role in inciting the Capitol riots on January 6:
"We celebrate the recent vote in the US House of Representatives to impeach President Trump, for the second time, and hope that the US Senate finds the courage to support a conviction, which will ensure he is never allowed to run for the presidency again,” said Johns.
“In the last four years, we have seen foundational elements of our democracy intentionally undermined under Trump's leadership. From not releasing tax returns so the American people could see what improper financial connections might exist, to using executive powers to gut civil rights protections and destroy long standing programs for refugees seeking asylum, to trying to overturn the most recent election results, Trump has failed to honor the office that he has occupied. With this vote, we are hopeful that this threat to our democracy never occurs again.”
