CINCINNATI– The National Black Justice Collective (NBJC) mourns the death of Laura Schueler, a 47-year-old Black transgender woman. Laura was shot and killed in Evanston, Ohio, on June 7, 2025. The police are currently investigating, but have made no arrests, and have said it was too early to establish if it was a hate crime.
Laura was a well-known and respected member of the Cincinnati queer community. Her friend described her as the Beyoncé of their city and said, “You put out the red carpet when you see Miss Laura.” She was described as being like an older sister. Laura was loyal to her friends and always there to support them, no matter what. She loved spending time in nature and fashion.
“My heart breaks for the LGBTQ+/SGL community in Cincinnati, who lost a beloved member of the community,” says Victoria Kirby York, Director of Public Policy and Programs. “The Transgender Advocacy Council notes that Laura is the third Black trans woman killed in the greater Cincinnati area in five years. Through this, we can see the disproportionate impact this violence has on the members of our community. Black trans women continue to be most vulnerable as they sit in the intersections of multiple marginalized identities. Like Laura, many of those stolen too soon are staples in their community, supporting the other Black people around them. We must stand up and protect them.”
Anyone with information about the murder of Laura Schueler is asked to call the Cincinnati Police Department at 513-765-1212 or Crime Stoppers at 513-352-3040. Callers have the option of remaining anonymous.
