NBJC Celebrates Human Rights Campaign Announcing the New President

WASHINGTON —  On June 25th, the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) announced a new President will take office in August, Alphonso B. David, an accomplished and nationally-recognized Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transexual Queer and Same Gender Loving (LGBTQ/SGL) civil rights lawyer and advocate. David will be the first civil rights lawyer and the first person of color to lead the HRC.

In response to this announcement, David J. Johns, Executive Director of the National Black Justice Coalition (NBJC), released the following statement:

“Representation matters and I am excited to see HRC shift in ways that acknowledge the diversity that has always existed in the LGBTQ/SGL community. Seeing an openly same gender loving African immigrant at the helm of HRC gives me high hopes for the future; specifically with regard to what we may be able to accomplish together for Black LGBTQ/SGL people throughout the diaspora. Let us all wrap our arms around him, exchange wisdom, and be encouraged by what is possible if we work better together.

"The National Black Justice Coalition celebrates the incoming President and believe with the HRC’s election of Alphonso David, we can continue the exciting partnership that has been curated over the years. We look forward to continued strides within Intersectional Social Justice. As we continue to shape what the future looks like for a world where we all get free, we offer the highest congratulations to HRC and Mr. Alphonso B. David.”

The National Black Justice Coalition (NBJC) is a civil rights organization dedicated to the empowerment of Black lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and same gender loving (LGBTQ/SGL) people, including people living with HIV/AIDS.
