Statement on Tragic Death of Nina Pop

WASHINGTON — In response to the murder of Nina Pop, a Black trans woman who was found murdered in her home in Sikeston, Missouri this week, David J. Johns, Executive Director of the National Black Justice Coalition, released the following statement:

“Last week was especially tough for Black Americans, who, in addition to coping with the coronavirus crisis, were reminded that while there is one United States of America, the justice system works differently, if at all, for Black Americans. The systemic challenges we face should be painfully evident to anyone with access to a smartphone and access to the internet.

“What may not be as clear are the unique challenges Black trans women face to simply stay alive. Just this week, Nina Pop was murdered in her home. No one has been held accountable and there's little public outcry. What little media coverage that exists largely misses our sad reality that every year Black trans women are murdered at rates that outpace every other community. This is beyond unacceptable.

“We owe it to Nina Pop and the other sisters whose lives have been stolen to ensure justice.

“A call to action: Call Prosecuting Attorney Amanda Oesech at 573-545-3562 and request a complete and fair investigation.”
