National Black Justice Coalition Applauds MLB’s Decision to Relocate the 2021 All-Star Game from Atlanta in Protest of Georgia’s New Voter Suppression Laws
Leading Black Civil Rights Group Urges PGA Tour, Masters Tournament to Pull Upcoming Event from Augusta National Golf Course

This afternoon, Major League Baseball announced that it would be pulling the upcoming 2021 All-Star Game from Atlanta, in protest of Georgia’s new laws focused on suppressing voter participation and turnout.
In reaction to the announcement, David Johns, executive director of the National Black Justice Coalition, a leading civil rights group, issued the following statement applauding the MLB’s decision and continuing the call for the PGA Tour and Masters Tournament to follow the MLB’s lead and pull upcoming events from the State:
“Major League Baseball is on the right side of history. We applaud the League’s decision to stand up for democracy and refuse to reward Georgia’s attack on voting rights with the prestige and money that holding the All-Star Game in Atlanta would have brought the State.
“Make no mistake – this is an urgent crisis. Republicans in Georgia are hellbent on turning back the clock on voting rights – and disenfranchising hundreds of thousands of Black and poor voters across the state in a desperate bid to retain power. Every company that operates in Georgia has to speak out and take action, against this unprecedented attack on our democratic values.
“We urge the PGA Tour and Masters Tournament to follow the leadership of Major League Baseball in standing up for civil rights by pulling the upcoming event from Augusta National Golf Course.
We need everyone to join the chorus and speak out against state-sanctioned efforts to further marginalize and disenfranchise voters.
