In commemoration of Caribbean-American HIV/AIDS Awareness Day, David J. Johns, executive director of the National Black Justice Coalition (NBJC), issued the following statement:

“The Caribbean-American community plays a deeply influential role within so many facets of our culture and everyday lives.

“Caribbean-Americans deserve more recognition today and every day. We hope today helps people further their understanding and conceptions of Caribbean-Americans, and the impact that HIV/AIDS has on Caribbean nations and communities.

“We honor the Caribbean and Caribban-American lives lost to HIV/AIDS and celebrate survivors who are living with HIV today. We commemorate this day in particular to spread awareness and inspire others to act.”

The HIV/AIDS epidemic spread to the Caribbean in the late 1970s. By 2001, the Caribbean was the second-most impacted region for HIV/AIDS in the world after Africa.
