Statement from Dr. David J. Johns, executive director of the National Black Justice Coalition, a leading Black LGBTQ+ civil rights organizations

“We applaud Congress for taking bipartisan action to pass the Respect for Marriage Act, which statutorily repeals DOMA and prevents future Dobbs-like U.S. Supreme Court action removing or diminishing the right to marry regardless of race or sexual orientation.

“In this democracy, the people have already determined we can all marry the person we love and have our marriage recognized and protected where we live. Passing this Act is a necessary step given impending threats by a Supreme Court attempting to weaken democracy by codifying decisions that should be the responsibility of elected leaders and should not stand in the place of necessary efforts to codify the Equality Act to ensure clear and consistent non-discrimination protections. There remains work to be done.”

The National Black Justice Coalition (NBJC) is a civil rights organization dedicated to the empowerment of Black lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and same gender loving (LGBTQ/SGL) people, including people living with HIV/AIDS.
