“The architect of 1963’s momentous March on Washington, Bayard Rustin was one of the greatest activists and organizers the world has ever known. He challenged authority, and never apologized for who he was, what he believed, or who he desired. And he did not back down. He made history, and in turn, he was forgotten,” the film’s synopsis notes.

“We are honored to host a watch party, supporting and amplifying this film in order to increase awareness about the impact of Bayard Rustin, and to share his story with as wide of an audience as possible,” said National Black Justice Coalition executive director Dr. David J. Johns. “Because of his identity as an openly same-gender loving man, he has been denied the recognition he deserves. Sadly, too few know about the life and legacy of Bayard. Those familiar with the March are largely unaware of how much more he did to defend democratic principles in the United States and abroad.”

Directed by DGA Award and five-time Tony Award winner George C. Wolfe, the film features Domingo’s powerful portrayal of Rustin. You’ll also witness the larger-than-life figures of Reverend Martin Luther King Jr., Adam Clayton Powell Jr., and Ella Baker, who stood alongside Rustin, shaping history and inspiring a movement toward freedom.

The star-studded cast includes Colman Domingo and Chris Rock, joined by the remarkable talents of Glynn Turman, Aml Ameen, Gus Halper, CCH Pounder, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, Johnny Ramey, Michael Potts, with Jeffrey Wright and Audra McDonald delivering outstanding performances.

Join us for this powerful movie night and commemorate a true hero in the fight for civil rights. As President Barack Obama aptly remarked, “Rustin” is not just the public-facing story of how the March on Washington came about; it’s also a portrait of a man who had to hide his sexuality. If it was widely known, his career, the march, and maybe even the Civil Rights Movement itself could be at risk.”
