Press Call: LGBT Advocates Discuss Plans, Priorities for March on Washington 50th Anniversary

Press Call for Tuesday, August 20th at 11 AM EDT

WASHINGTON, DC – Tuesday, August 20th at 11:00 AM EDT, key organizers of the 50th Anniversary of the March on Washington will join leaders of the LGBT community to discuss joint plans and priorities for the event.   

The 50th Anniversary of the March on Washington is being recognized with a week-long series of events culminating in a rally and march on Saturday, August 24th.  More information on this week of events is available at http://nationalactionnetwork.net/mow/.

The march will call on Congress to pass the Employment Non-Discrimination Act, a restoration of the Voting Rights Act, comprehensive immigration reform, and several other key priorities of the civil and human rights movement.  The LGBT community is a key part of this broad coalition of Americans that will participate in the march. 

The call will also highlight the role of Bayard Rustin, the openly gay executive director of the original March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, who was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom on August 8th.
