WASHINGTON, DC– The National Black Justice Coalition (NBJC) celebrates and congratulates Jerrod Carmichael, who will host the 80th Annual Golden Globes. Carmichael recently won an Emmy earlier this year for his comedy special “Jerrod Carmichael: Rothaniel”. During this comedy special he invited people into his identity as a same-gender loving man. “The Carmichael Show” which Jerrod co-created and starred in received GLAAD Media Award and NAACP Image Award nominations.

Carmichael will be the first-ever solo Black and/or LGBTQ+/same-gender loving host of the televised awards ceremony.

“I am thrilled to see Jerrod hosting a major award show on a major television network. His talent makes him perfect for this role, and I am excited to see him show up and all the way out,” said Dr. David J. Johns, executive director of the National Black Justice Coalition. “Jerrod hosting also provides visibility for our community. It is especially important for Black LGBTQ+/SGL youth to see that it’s possible for them to pursue passion, demonstrate excellence, and take up space. At a time where political bullies are trafficking in fear and trying to prevent us from speaking the word “gay” it is important to witness Jerrod stand in a long line of Black queer folx who have pushed the culture and our country closer toward Congressman John Lewis’ vision of the beloved community.”

The Golden Globes will air on NBC and Peacock on Tuesday, January 10th at 8 pm EST

The National Black Justice Coalition (NBJC) is a civil rights organization dedicated to the empowerment of Black lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and same gender loving (LGBTQ/SGL) people, including people living with HIV/AIDS.
