WASHINGTON — Following the Supreme Court’s decision in U.S. v Texas, Dr. David J. Johns, executive director of the National Black Justice Coalition (NBJC), a leading Black LGBTQ+ civil rights organization, issued this statement:

Today’s decision to narrow immigration deportations to individuals who are a threat to public safety and national security is a win for Black LGBTQ+/same-gender loving (LGBTQ+/SGL) immigrants, and the policy should be a model moving forward. Any policy regarding criminal justice or immigration enforcement that pushes public officials to detain, arrest, or imprison a large group of people based solely on conviction categories increases bias, prejudice, discrimination, and profiling in that process.

“The Biden-Harris administration was correct in prioritizing people who threaten public safety on a person-by-person basis instead of categorizing people purely by past offenses or conviction types. Public policy seeking to treat people based on stereotypes and not by individual actions or character has led to the disproportionate amount of Black LGBTQ+/SGL people we see incarcerated in prisons and ICE detention centers.

“We urge members of the community to educate their congressional representatives on the importance of sending comprehensive immigration reform that includes a path to citizenship, takes this approach to public safety related detainments and deportations, and ensures all facilities are trans-inclusive to President Biden to sign into law TODAY!”

The National Black Justice Coalition (NBJC) is a civil rights organization dedicated to the empowerment of Black lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and same gender loving (LGBTQ/SGL) people, including people living with HIV/AIDS.
