FLORIDA –Following news the Supreme Court of the United States declaring that hate-fueled Florida law limiting drag shows in the state will remain blocked, Dr. David J. Johns, executive director of the National Black Justice Coalition (NBJC), a leading Black LGBTQ+/SGL (same gender loving) civil rights organization, issued the following statement:
“We applaud this democracy-strengthening decision by the U.S. Supreme Court to block Florida’s restrictive legislation targeting drag shows, a crucial blow to Governor Ron DeSantis’ personal political ambitions driven anti-LGBTQ, anti-woke, anti-democratic agenda. This critical victory for Florida and democracy is not only a triumph for the LGBTQ+/same-gender loving community but also serves as a resounding message against the nationwide GOP crusade of hate and as a warning to other so-called leaders seeking to target the LGBTQ+ community and their fundamental rights for political gain.
“In the past year alone, 586 anti-LGBTQ+ bills have been introduced, with 22 states proposing legislation targeting drag shows in various capacities. The Supreme Court’s decision to block Florida’s law deals a major blow to DeSantis’ efforts to usher in a blueprint for an anti-woke Republican platform. It is another noteworthy failure in his fledgling presidential campaign founded on an agenda of anti-democratic hate and division. The citizens of Florida deserve better than DeSantis. Our country deserves better too.
“We also celebrate this decision’s profound impact, specifically on Black drag performers who rely on events like Drag Story Hour and Drag Bingo to sustain themselves. These events, which showcase Black drag performers’ vibrant artistry and creativity, are essential for paying bills, keeping the lights on, stimulating our economy, and entertaining communities. The Supreme Court’s intervention safeguards the ability of these talented individuals to express themselves freely and share their art with the world without fear of state-sponsored censorship.
“As we mark this momentous win, NBJC recognizes much more work needs to be done to continue fighting for the rights and well-being of the Black LGBTQ+/SGL community against the onslaught of attacks on our livelihoods and freedoms. We call on leaders at all levels of government to heed this warning of what happens when you encroach upon peoples’ rights and basic expression of who they are and urge lawmakers to reject any discriminatory legislation, instead working toward a more inclusive and equitable society.”
