WASHINGTON – Following the U.S. House of Representatives passing the Parents Bill of p Act, Dr. David J. Johns, executive director of the National Black Justice Coalition (NBJC), a leading Black LGBTQ+ civil rights organization, issued the following statement:

“The Parents Bill of Rights Act passed by Republicans in control of the U.S. House of Representatives is yet another vehicle for the anti-democratic, white nationalist GOP to traffic in hate and discrimination in its crusade against Black people and the LGBTQ+/Same-Gender Loving community.

“This bill is political posturing designed to ignite the Party’s base around anti-woke hysteria. In this case, the bill would allow parents susceptible to manufactured right-wing paranoia to opt their children out of any education related to race, sex, gender identity, or sexual orientation. The bill and the underlying threats to democracy, civility, and holistic development pose a significant threat to the rights and safety of Black, transgender, and LGBTQ+/SGL students and puts already vulnerable students at additional risk, limiting their access to resources and support needed to thrive.

“The National Black Justice Coalition denounces this discriminatory and harmful legislation and calls on Congress to support H.Res. 219, the Bill of Rights for Students and Parents, which affirms the rights of all students to have safe and inclusive educational environments, free from discrimination and harassment based on race, sexual orientation, sex, or gender identity.

“We stand in solidarity with our LGBTQ+/SGL and Black siblings, along with all marginalized communities impacted by discriminatory legislation. We urge Congress to prioritize the safety and well-being of all students and to support H.Res. 219 as a necessary step towards creating a more just and equitable education system for all.

“Our babies deserve better. All of them.”

The National Black Justice Coalition (NBJC) is a civil rights organization dedicated to the empowerment of Black lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and same gender loving (LGBTQ/SGL) people, including people living with HIV/AIDS.
