WASHINGTON – Following news that the Biden administration has come out in opposition to gender-affirming surgery for minors, a devastating blow for transgender youth across the country, Dr. David J. Johns, CEO and Executive Director of the National Black Justice Collective (NBJC), a leading civil rights organization, issued the following statement:

“NBJC is deeply disheartened by the recent statement from the Biden administration opposing gender-affirming surgery for minors. For a president that has been a steadfast supporter of transgender rights and advancing LGBTQ+/same-gender loving equality, this is a significant disappointment to transgender youth across the country, who simply want the freedom to be their true selves.

“Medical decisions should be made by the person directly impacted, their family, and their doctors—not politicians or government bureaucrats. Period. Whether we are discussing abortion or gender-affirming care, politics should never trump the power of individuals to choose what is best for their life, health, and bodily autonomy.

“We urge the Biden-Harris administration to return to its prior position of unwavering support for all people—including and especially transgender youth—to own their power. The government should not be in the business of dictating personal medical decisions that profoundly affect an individual’s well-being and future.

“NBJC remains steadfast in our commitment to advocating for the rights and dignity of transgender individuals. We call on the administration to reaffirm its commitment to protecting and empowering the transgender community, ensuring that every person has the freedom to make decisions about their own body without undue interference from the state.”

The National Black Justice Coalition (NBJC) is a civil rights organization dedicated to the empowerment of Black lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and same gender loving (LGBTQ/SGL) people, including people living with HIV/AIDS.
