CHICAGO, IL– The National Black Justice Coalition (NBJC) mourns the death of Lisa Love, a 35-year-old Black transgender woman. She was shot and killed on October 17, 2023, while walking home from a friend’s house in Chicago, Illinois. Her family believes she was targeted because she was trans.

Lisa’s family described her as loving, caring, and free-spirited. She was also funny, smart, beautiful, and an all-around good person and a breath of fresh air in the world.

“We are extremely concerned by this being the fourth death of a Black trans sibling in the month of October and the second in Chicago following a two-year period where nearly a dozen of our sisters have been murdered in the region–that we know of,” said Victoria Kirby York, Director of Public Policy and Programs. “Over the last ten years, at least 231 of the trans, nonbinary, and gender nonconforming people who died by violence were killed with a gun. The trans community has suffered for too long. As we enter November, the month of Transgender Day of Resilience and Remembrance, it is essential that we all advocate for policies and programs that will protect the community and ensure they can thrive, not just survive.”

The Head of Chicago’s Federal Bureau of Investigations office recently issued a warning about the growing threats of hate crimes in the city. If you witness or experience threats of or an act of hate, or local police departments fail to properly report or investigate an act of hate, please contact your local FBI office HERE
