Statement from David J. Johns, executive director of the National Black Justice Coalition, on Marsha P. Johnson’s 75th birthday:
“Marsha P. Johnson was authentically and unapologetically herself at a time when transgender people were not accepted or embraced, including within the queer community.
“As a transgender woman of color, Marsha put herself in harm’s way to fight for the rights of all queer people, especially the most oppressed and marginalized among us. She was a driving force behind the Stonewall riots and LGBTQ+/SGL (same gender loving) rights movement that we continue to fight today. We are grateful for her fierce activism and celebrate her legacy on what would have been her 75th birthday by advocating for federal bills like the Equality Act.
“We encourage everyone to join us in honor of Marsha P. Johnson by contacting their U.S. Senators and requesting that they vote ‘yes’ to modernizing America’s civil rights laws.”
