The National Black Justice Coalition Urges President Biden to Nominate a Black LGBTQ+/ Same Gender Loving Woman to the Supreme Court

Group Recommends Judge Staci Michelle Yandle, Judge G. Helen Whitener to the Nation’s Top Court
WASHINGTON, DC — National Black Justice Coalition, a leading Black LGBTQ+ civil rights group, calls for President Biden to nominate a Black same-gender loving woman to the United States Supreme Court to replace Justice Breyer on the nation’s highest court. Three leading candidates that would add much-needed diversity of experiences are:
- Judge Staci Michelle Yandle from the U.S. district court for the Southern District of Illinois in the 7th Circuit.
- Judge G. Helen Whitener serves on the Washington State Supreme Court and is a Black, disabled lesbian.
- Judge J. Michelle Childs, who is a cisgender, heterosexual Black woman, made the historic ruling on the case that made same-sex marriages legal in South Carolina which helped pave the way for marriage equality nationally.
“The U.S. Supreme Court is a branch of government that should include the diversity of life experiences of the American people on its bench. Staci Michelle Yandle and G. Helen Whitener are two candidates among others who would provide racial, gender, and sexual orientation perspectives and cultural competency to assist in fair, equitable, and objective rulings. Judge J. Michelle Childs would also be an excellent pick” said David Johns, Executive Director of the National Black Justice Coalition. “It’s time for President Biden to live up to his campaign promise and appoint a Black woman to the Supreme Court.”
