National Black Justice Coalition Calls for Justice for Brian “Egypt” Powers and Tiffany Harris
NEW YORK — in response to the murder of Brian “Egypt” Powers, a Black transgender man in Akron, Ohio, and Tiffany Harris, a Black transgender woman in the Bronx, NY, David J. Johns, the Executive Director of the National Black Justice Coalition, released the following statement:
“While the national focus on the effort to ensure #AllBlackLivesMatter shifts to the upcoming presidential election and the unrelenting pressures associated with COVID-19 Black trans people are still being murdered. There is not enough attention being paid to the damage that racism, anti-Blackness, and transphobia continue to have and this must end. Egypt deserves justice — just as his siblings do. He deserves to be remembered and for us to advocate for justice for him too. \
“We are facing an epidemic of violence against trans women and Black trans women especially. 25 trans people, 9 of whom were Black trans women have been killed, thus far, this year. Tiffany Harris and all the Black trans people murdered this year deserve for us to say their names and demand justice for them. If #BlackLivesMatter to you, call the local police departments in Akron, Ohio (330-375-2552) and the Bronx, New York (718-220-5811) to demand justice for Brian ‘Egypt’ Powers and Tiffany Harris, respectively.”
