FLORIDA – After the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 11th Circuit’s ruling that Florida’s “Stop Woke Act,” limiting diversity and race-based discussions in private workplaces, is unconstitutional, Dr. David J. Johns, CEO of the National Black Justice Coalition (NBJC), a leading Black LGBTQ+ civil rights organization, issued the following statement:
“This ruling against Florida’s egregious ‘Stop Woke Act,’ which sought to stifle diversity and race-based discussions, reaffirms the fundamental principle that the Constitution prohibits government interference in matters of free speech and expression.
“It strikes down a bill that epitomized the insidious nature of white nationalism masquerading as public policy, advancing anti-Blackracist legislation aimed to suppress the voices of Black people and the LGBTQ+ community, imposing authoritarian measures to censor and supporess that sought to dictate how individuals express themselves and engage with issues of race and identity.
“Governor Ronald Dion DeSantis’ shameless manipulation of the term ‘woke’ to advance his political agenda was rooted in white privilege and a blatant disregard for the fact that words mean things and the democratic principles enshrined in our Constitution. His attempts to censor marginalized groups and assert authoritarian control over dissenting voices reveal a deeply troubling commitment to a white nationalistic, anti-democratic, and segregationist ideology.
“It is abundantly clear that Governor DeSantis’ misleading and antiquated policy efforts are destined to fail when held up to the scrutiny of our Constitution and the values of equality and justice. Just as his presidential campaign faltered in the face of public rejection of his divisive rhetoric and policies, so too will his attempts to undermine the rights and freedoms of Black people and the LGBTQ+ community.
“We must remain vigilant in our defense of free speech, diversity, equity, and inclusion, rejecting all attempts to silence or marginalize voices that challenge the status quo. The fight against racism, bigotry, and authoritarianism is far from over. Still, the 11th Circuit’s ruling is a powerful reminder that justice and equality will prevail in the face of oppression and injustice. We will continue to stand strong in defense of our Constitution and the fundamental rights of all individuals, regardless of race, gender, or sexual orientation.”
