MILWAUKEE, WI– The National Black Justice Coalition (NBJC) mourns the death of Chyna Long, a 30-year-old Black transgender woman. Chyna was shot and killed on October 8, 2023, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Long’s family said they had been harassed because of Chyna’s trans identity. They believe this could be a hate crime.

Chyna was a choreographer, with dancers seeking her out in droves. She was described as unapologetic. Her family said a piece of their joy has been taken.

“My heart breaks for Chyna, her family, and the trans community in Milwaukee, who have lost five Black trans sisters in the past year alone,” said Victoria Kirby York, Director of Public Policy and Programs. “We call on city officials and law enforcement, at every level, to take action to protect the Black trans community.”

“As we approach Trans Day of Resilience, it is essential that all of us recommit to ending the epidemic of violence and recognize the full humanity of those who have been stolen from us.”

Anyone with information on the killing of Chyna Long is asked to contact the Milwaukee police at 414-935-7360 or report tips anonymously to Crime Stoppers at 414-224-TIPS.
