FLORIDA – The National Black Justice Coalition (NBJC) mourns the death of London Pride, a 26-year-old Black transgender woman who was shot and killed in Miami-Dade County on October 23, 2023. London’s death is the 25th killing of a transgender or gender-nonconforming person this year.

The family believes her ex-boyfriend caused her death. Yet, police have not taken him in for questioning. The lack of police action shows a willful disregard for her life and the justice that she and her family deserve.

“Even though London had proper identification with her name and gender matching how she moved through the world, police, the media, and emergency response personnel misgendered her, restricting opportunities to solicit the tips needed to investigate her death properly,” explained Victoria Kirby York, director of public policy and programs at the National Black Justice Coalition. “This is unacceptable and poor policing. We demand the Miami-Dade Police Department do better and that all law enforcement-related personnel be trained on the best ways to investigate cases concerning transgender and gender-expansive people. NBJC is willing to lead the training to minimize future loss of life and increase accountability for those who steal the lives of our sisters.”

London’s aunt described her as “always beautiful and pretty,” saying, “She’ll give you the shirt off her back.”
